I know some folk find the idea of applying for grants or funding a daunting idea, something that other people do. But honestly, it can be a real game changer for those of us operating on a smaller scale. I speak from personal experience.
Before I go any further, I just want to be clear on the difference between a grant and a scheme, because there are key differences.
· A grant is a sum of money that’s to be used for a specific purpose.
· A scheme is a long-term structure where you have to fulfil certain criteria to get your money.
Either option can be useful, but obviously they have differing commitment levels. Be sure you know the terms and conditions for anything you’re considering signing up to.
With that out of the way, the first real step is knowing where to look for useful grants that you might qualify for. Of course, you can get lost in a rabbit hole of Google searching but, to save you time, for Scottish folk my recommendations are Lantra grants through SkillsHub Scotland. There are various different schemes that pay up to £500 per course, or more in certain circumstances.
Theres options for funding through the Women in Agriculture fund, Next Generation Practical Training fund and now the Small Producers Fund.
Is there something you’ve been considering adding to your farm business but you need more knowledge behind you before you can start. This is a great example of something a grant can help you with. Find a training grant that offers a course to help you fill that skills gap. By doing this you empower yourself to make those changes wisely, with confidence. Without putting extra strain on your cash flow.
The application is very simple, you don’t need help to do it. You do need your Business Reference Number (BRN), and that’s all.
Gaining funding is just the beginning, it often opens up other opportunities. Making new connections with people you might not otherwise have met.
Take my experience with Lantra. I first applied for a training grant with them in 2020 and I’ve done 2 courses with their help since. Not only that but now, with the activities I have built on the croft, I am now a training provider myself, giving something back by providing my Box Clever and Your Farm Your Way courses.
